Bridal Makeup and Hair - Quick Guide

Wanting to look gorgeous and stunning on your wedding day is absolutely normal and to achieve this you are going to need an array of services and professionals such as Makeup Artist, Hair Stylist nail specialist and for all you sun loving ladies a spray tan specialist. Let's be honest it is your big day and you want to look perfect!

I am going to cover some of the bridal services that you will want to have for your big day. The two most commonly used bridal professionals are Makeup Artists and Hair stylists, you need to remember to choose a hair style that will not only look good on the day but will also look good in all the years to come, timeless hair styles always work.

When choosing a makeup artist, ensure that you have had a trial. A trial will allow you to test the makeup and give you an idea of how long the makeup will last. It is also a good idea to take photos to see how it will look under the harsh lights of flash photography.

The most important thing to remember is to choose professionals that have experience, past clients with great testimonies of their experience, and work.

Hair

You can get many references from bridal magazines; however you do need to remember that like all concept designs some are not made for practical use.

When you are choosing whether to have your hair up or down 2 factors that you should take into account are that hair designs that are pinned up will last longer. Designs that are flowing and out will tend to lose shape and volume over the day, particularly if your hair is thick or heavy. Your hairstyle will ultimately come down to the style of dress you choose.

More and more brides are choosing to have Hairpieces to create volume and length. Along with Hair pieces, brides are also choosing to have hair extensions put in, my only tip when having hair extensions is to make sure that you choose 100% human hair, other types of hair like synthetic cannot be curled or straighten without melting (and you certainly don't want melted hair on your wedding day!!)

Makeup

Before anything, ensure you have a trial run, let your makeup artist know what ideas you have for your big day. Bring magazine cut outs of looks that you may have in mind or send internet links to your makeup artist before your trial, if you are not clear about what you like and what you don't like when it comes to makeup don't be surprised if you are disappointed with the end result.

Don't be afraid to let your makeup artist know what you like about the trial and what you are not sure about, at the end of the day you are paying for their service and ultimately you're in charge; in saying this be very mindful that you are hiring a professional for their experience and skill if they disagree with the look that you what, listen to their professional opinion as to why they believe you should try something new.

If you are choosing to go with a dark, heavy Smokey-eye then don't choose a bold coloured lipstick... people won't know where to look when you are walking down the aisle, at your eyes at your lips at your dress etc. The makeup artist should be enhancing all you natural beauty to compliment your hair and dress. The end result should be flawless skin, sexy Smokey eyes and a little colour on your cheeks.

All professional makeup artists will have water-resistant Mascara eyeliner and when I say will, I mean should and if they don't, insist that they do, or my advice hire a new makeup artist! These products are essential must have's for any good makeup artist and I will tell you why; most brides will have a teary moment! What you don't want is to have you eyeliner or Mascara running down your face during your special moments.

Semi-permanent lashes are the big thing at the moment and for as little as $100.00 you can have perfect lashes for the next month. If you're going to have false lashes on your wedding day as most brides do to enhance their eyes I would highly recommend getting the semi-permanent lashes you won't regret it. You will look divine on your wedding day and throughout your honeymoon!

I have said it before and I will say it again prior preparation makes all the difference. If you're prone to acne or blotchy skin talk to your beauty therapist and makeup artist, you know you have found a top makeup artist when they are able to provide you with education on how to improve the quality of your skin. With all the money you're going to spend on your wedding day investing in some creams, serums or moisturisers will be invaluable.

Choosing Your Bridal Makeup Artist

All brides are going to look stunning on their wedding day. Whether a friend has applied the makeup or a professional makeup artist has; however sometimes bad things happen and thing don't go quite according to plan. The hair might fall out of place or come un-done all together the makeup may be too heavy or to light Murphy's law is sometimes more powerful then the best wedding day planner money can buy. Here are a few tips when choosing your makeup artist for your big day.

THE MAKEUP ARTIST TRIAL

1. DO a trial, reviews are great, recommendations are great, but your face is NOT your friends face, your skin may react differently to the exact same makeup look that you so loved on your best friends wedding day!!

2. Your makeup artistis on trial, not you. Extract every little bit of information out of them! "will the makeup run if it rains?", "Will it crack in the heat?" don't be scared to ask anything and everything, your paying top dollar and if your not happy with what your getting make sure you let them know why!

3. Trial the different looks, have a back up plan, water proof foundation "in case it rains" may look completely different to all day foundation. pay the extra $65.00 - $100.00 for the extra trial run their is no point spending thousands on a photographer to look like a clown on your wedding day because the makeup didn't last when you had a teary moment or it was so hot that your sweat left streaks in your foundation and blush.

4. Let your makeup artist know if you will look different on your wedding day e.g. if your going to have a fake tan on your wedding day you are going to need a completely different foundation and concealer, in fact you may need a completely new look!! The same goes for your hair color don't expect that your eye shadow will look the same if you're a brunette on the trial and a blonde on your wedding day!

THE LOOK

The look and color you choose for your big day will ultimately depend on your personal preference; however let your makeup artist recommend a few things "you don't go to a doctor to tell them how you want to cure a cold, you go because they have the experience a knowledge on how to do it better then you do!" Some points to consider when you are choosing what look, you ultimately go for.

1. The time of the ceremony are you having a day or night wedding? A lighter, more natural look is better suited to a day wedding and a more dramatic look is better suited to a night wedding.

2. What time of year is your wedding? If you are having a Spring/Summer wedding, go for bright, pastel look. Warm, deeper shades will be better presented for a winter wedding.

3. If you are Blond or fair skinned, cool tones of grey, blue, soft pink and lilac are ideal.

4. If you are a brunette or olive skinned, warm neutral tones of brown, taupe, burgundy & red are more suited.

5. Remember your make up should be a little more dramatic than your everyday make-up, flash photography can tend to make the subject look more pale and wash-out the makeup in photos.

Take your time in choosing, ask the questions, get the answers, A Makeup Artist that agrees to everything you have to say may not be the right one for you. If you have all the answers and know how to do it why are you paying top dollar for a pro?
