Why Sulphate Free Shampoo May Be the Most Healthy Option for Your Hair

Why Sulphate Free Shampoo May Be the Most Healthy Option for Your Hair

Sulphate free shampoo has quickly become popular in recent years. The all-natural, organic way of living has spread beyond food, and into the areas of clothing, cosmetics and other beauty products or toiletries. One such area seeing a rise in natural products is hair care products.

One major change in this area is the addition of sulphate free shampoos. While there are companies that have been making such products for a very long time, many of the larger companies that also sell normal shampoos with sulphates are now producing and selling sulphate-free versions of their best-selling products.

The term "sulphate" covers a range of chemicals, including sodium lauryl sulphate (the most common in shampoo), sodium myreth sulphate, TEA laureth sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate and ammonia laureth sulphate. All of these chemicals are actually surfactants, and they allow water to penetrate deeply into the strands of your hair. These chemicals also over-strip oil and grease from your hair and scalp. If you have extremely oily hair that doesn't respond to typical treatments, then this isn't a horrible thing. But if you have normal to dry hair and shampoo with products containing sulphate daily, then your hair could be showing wear and tear from this. This includes dullness, dry strands, broken strands or split ends, dandruff from an over-dry, itchy scalp and a general loss of bounce and life. Your hair does need some natural oils to remain healthy and vital. While there is no scientific evidence that sulphates can cause cancer, you need to realize that they are chemicals, and chemicals aren't typically something you'd willingly put on your body. Long term use of shampoo with sulphates may lead to thinning hair. In fact, if you already have thinning hair then switch to sulphate-free shampoo, you may reverse some of the effects of this.

African Americans, those with dry hair, color-treated hair, or dandruff-prone hair, as well as anyone whose hair just doesn't have the same "life" anymore should seriously consider sulphate-free shampoo.

Other reasons to switch include the effect these chemicals have on the environment. Shampoo suds do go down the drain, taking with them all the ingredients in the shampoo! Environmental or "green" groups strongly advocate the use of natural and sulphate-free hair products due to the effects these draining chemicals have on water sources. Lastly, switching to sulphate-free shampoo may also help your wallet. With less chemicals to manufacture, producers of these products can sell them for cheaper.
