Who Giorgio Armani?
Few people can say that they have never heard of Giorgio Armani, although undoubtedly many are not aware of his humble beginnings and the unusual path he took to becoming one of the most famous Italian fashion designers of all time. Born in Piacenza Italy in 1934, Giorgio Armani became interested in a career in the medical field at an early age. After studying medicine at the University of Milan, he went on to join the
Italian Army working in the infirmary. Upon leaving the military he went in a totally different direction when he took a job as a window dresser in a Milan department store and quickly moved on to work in the mens department where he became interested in the fashion industry. In the mid 1960's he begin designing menswear and eventually became a freelance designer for several fashion houses. In 1975 after much hard work, he founded his own corporation, not surprisingly called Armani. In the 1980's the Armani suit became a household word when it was made popular by Richard Gere's character in the movie American Gigolo.
Today Giorgio Armani is known for far more than his iconic suit. In 1979 he began to manufacture ready-to-wear clothing in the United States for both men and women. This went on to include swimwear, underwear and accessories. It's no surprise that in the 1980's Armani teamed up with the cosmetic corporation L'Oreal and introduced a wonderful line of fragrances. Since that time Giorgio Armani has designed over 86 fragrances in collaboration with many different perfumers.
Armani's first fragrance to come out under the Armani label in 1982 was simply called Armani and it was for women. It was soon followed in 1984 by a fragrance for men called Armani Eau Pour Homme. Beginning in the late 1990's many of Armani's fragrances were released in pairs for men and women. In 1998 She and He were introduced under Emporio Armani, a label that was designed to appeal more to a younger generation.
This was followed in 2001 with a lighter fresher fragrance duo called White He and White She also under the Emporio label. One of Armani's most popular fragrances for men, Armani Code in 2004 was followed by Armani Code for Womenin 2006. Beyonce Knowles promoted one of Armani's fragrances in 2007 called
Emporia Armani Diamonds. Giorgio Armani continues to manufacture wonderful fragrances with two of the latest ones Acqua di Gio Essenza for Men, and Acqua di Gioia Eau de Parfum Satinee for women, both released in 2012. No doubt he will continue to delight us with more fragrances for many years to come.
