How to Tell Synthetic and Natural Hair Extensions Apart

How to Tell Synthetic and Natural Hair Extensions Apart

Different types of hair and different ways of applying extensions have been discovered by renowned technicians. Human extensions can be fitted using glue, pins, clip-ins, micro rings and many more. The quality of the extensions also depends on another major factor: the type of hair. Basically, there are two general types of extensions: natural or true human hair, and synthetic.

Natural Human Extensions

The origin of hair enhancements dates as far back as the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Worn by both men and women, these extensions became a symbol of social stature and cosmetic beautification. The use of human hair extensions intensified when women longed to add extra volume to their hair and achieve the "pompadour style". This fashion has since been revived a couple of times, during the 1890s and 1940 and 1950s. During these periods, the demand for human enhancements rocketed-and, today, human hair extensions are very expensive.

Natural extensions are harvested from real people blessed with naturally great looking hair. These people are paid with good money in exchange for their hair. Amongst human hair enhancements, the most sought after is the one called "Remy" or "Remi". The cuticle layer of Remy hair is still intact and flows naturally. Because the cuticles are uniformly aligned, Remy enhancements are less prone to tangling.

There are also other types of hair used in hair wefts. Generally, the classification is based on the race of the human donor. Hair experts found out that different races have different hair characteristics; different in their natural color, shine and strength, amongst other characteristics.

Man-Made or Synthetic Extensions

Synthetic fibers like "toyokalon", "kanekalon" or "monofibre" are the materials behind synthetic hair extensions. Since the introduction of synthetic hair extensions, a lot of manufacturers have created synthetic fibers that are so good in quality that they aren't really detectable as synthetic anymore. This type of extension keeps getting better and better.

Reputable hair extension providers have found the following differences between natural and synthetic hair enhancements: longevity or durability, shaping or styling, dyeing, appearance, and price.

Genuine natural extensions are longer lasting, easier to style and dye, and appear better than the synthetic hair extensions. The only problem, however, is the price.

Human hair extensions are by far more expensive than their synthetic counterparts. So, if your budget is restricted, you may choose lower quality real human hair or high quality synthetic hair. But if you can spend a little more, then you can't go wrong with human enhancements. Ensure that you source your hair from a local, credible company. You are advised to avoid buying extensions online. Most hair salons also have a team of trained technicians that can your add enhancements to perfection.
