So you want to know how to straighten your hair? To tell you the truth there are several methods to straighten your hair such as such as a relaxer, a Dominican blow out with a brush and blow dryer, or one of the new keratin treatments. However the most common way to straighten hair is with a flat-iron also known as a straighten iron. Flat-ironing is a temporary way to achieve straight hair, and it is safe for all hair types unlike some chemical straighteners. With the way hairstyles trends change it would be beneficial for every woman to know how to properly use a flat-iron.

While perusing my career as a professional cosmetologist, I am amazed by how many people go to the salon just to their hair straighten. I asked a few of my clients, "why pay for a flat-iron if you can do it yourself?" The most common answer is very simple... They don't know how to. So I have listed some steps below to help you straighten your hair.

How to straighten your hair: How to straighten your hair with a flat-iron.

1. Shampoo and condition your hair.

2. Towel dry your hair.

3. Apply leave in conditioner.

4. Apply a dime size amount of heat protectant.

5. Use a wide tooth comb or detangling brush to evenly distribute the products.

6. Blow dry with the comb attachment or brush/comb while blow drying.

7. If necessary a second application of heat protectant can be applied.

8. Section horizontally starting at the nape working your way up.

9. Take about a 1 inch of hair comb the hair smooth the small teeth of and all-purpose comb.

10. Slide the flat-iron down the hair in one smooth continuous motion.

11. A second pass with the flat-iron maybe necessary.

Warnings for Straighten Your Hair

Below are a few warning that you should take into consideration when using a flat-iron. Flat ironing hair should be taken seriously due to the heat changing the physical shape of the hair.

Now there are some tricks and tips that the pros use when straighten hair, but most cosmetologist will tell you that products and tools play a large role in creating hairstyles. The key to those perfect salon styles are the professional grade products and tools the professionals use. Now you don't have to go out and spend  tons of money on products and tools, but you do need to put some thought into them. Instead of going to a drug store or general store to buy your hair care products go to stores that specialize in beauty. The quality of your product will increase with out the price increasing as well.
