The Radical Truth

The Radical Truth

Ladies, wouldn't you just love to walk into a room and have everyone notice you and think to themselves how beautiful, young and refreshed your skin looks? Picture it-you are walking with your head held high because you are glowing-and you know it! That must be an amazing feeling-don't you think?

We must admit, the beauty industry is booming. We as human beings pay an incredible amount of attention to our physical appearance. In this day and age, we all have this ceaseless desire to look great, just like celebrities. However, aside from a great sense of fashion and being well-groomed, part of maintaining an impeccable appearance includes keeping our skin looking young, healthy and glowing. Some of us are so obsessed with trying to look younger that we are willing to do whatever it takes to fight against this natural and inevitable process called aging (especially once we enter our thirties!). To remedy the situation, we continuously aim straight at the surface-our skin. In this fashion, we apply all sorts of products, more specifically "anti-aging" creams.

These creams are what consumers normally tend to flock to in order to slow down the aging process. Why? Because thanks to beauty ads, we believe that they are essential for beautiful, young-looking and glowing skin. But, truth-be-told, the majority of these creams we reach out to only focus on the "surface". Our attention is therefore on the wrong thing, which is to simply treat the symptoms (visible signs of aging). What you really want is to get rid of the problem altogether (what actually causes the appearance of signs of aging), not just the symptoms. Unfortunately, these creams do not have the ability to penetrate deep within and attack the TRUE source of the problem. What you must understand is that to find the source, you must actually dig deeper-much deeper. Here is a clue (or the answer): the actual source is located at the cellular level. What is causing signs of aging to start appearing is a buildup of what we call "free radicals" in your cells.

Here is a little metaphor/analogy to remind you of how free radicals operate in your body. Think, if you will, of the following scenario:

Let's suppose it's Valentine's Day and a bunch of good-looking single guys (free radicals), tired of being single, decide to go out to a night club to hopefully, find love. At the entrance, there is a huge sign that says "For Couples Only" (meaning healthy cells with paired men and women electrons). Desperate to get in, the single guys (free radicals) sneak in by the side door located in the alley. Once inside, their mission is to hook up with gorgeous women, regardless of who gets hurt in the process. The single guys (free radicals) carelessly approach happy couples (healthy cells) with the intention of stealing the pretty ladies (women electrons) away from their mates (men electrons). Once seduction has taken place and the mission has been accomplished, the furious men (men electrons) who have lost their girl now become single guys (free radicals) themselves. Since their other half is gone and they have become unstable, they revengefully and desperately try to break up other happy couples (healthy cells) by stealing the women (women electrons) away from their men (men electrons). If this situation is left uncontrolled, a huge fight can break out.

However, thanks to the bouncers (antioxidants) roaming around the party room, they protect the happy couples (healthy cells) from the single guys' (free radicals) careless behavior. However, let's suppose that the number of single guys (free radicals) outweighs the number of bouncers (antioxidants). What do you think would happen by the end of the night? Trouble... And, this is exactly what happens in your body. Damage starts occurring and it is reflected onto your skin.

The Effects of Free Radicals on the Skin

You may ask yourself, "Why and how exactly do free radicals affect my skin?" According to the free radical theory, aging is caused by the slow cumulative oxidation of body tissues over a lifetime (Gutteridge, 1994). Over time, your cells that have been under attack tend to oxidize (the process of "stealing" electrons from healthy cells is called the oxidation process). Once this occurs in your body, it triggers symptoms to start showing. Other than your health being affected by free radicals, your skin is in danger as well. How come?

Because the reactive nature of free radicals is so powerful that it can have a strong impact on your skin and its structure. Most likely, it will begin aging prematurely. As a result, unwanted symptoms such as fine lines, wrinkles, thickening of the skin, crow's feet and skin sagging may start appearing.

In addition, you may be experiencing the loss of skin elasticity and firmness. In their damaging process, free radicals have detrimental effects on a skin protein called elastin. This protein is responsible for holding the skin cells together as well as giving it flexibility and strength. If damaged, it will cause the skin to appear wrinkled and possibly discolored as well, thus rapidly accelerating the aging process.

Aesthetically, these results may definitely be terrifying for many women, and if your goal is to have natural glowing skin-you can forget about it! Since we can only run, but not hide, from this aging process, what can be done in order to, at the very least, slow it down? The secret is to take antioxidants.
