Six Reasons to Drink Water for Weight Loss

Six Reasons to Drink Water for Weight Loss

These days, it seems like every candid photo of a celebrity shows them clutching a bottle of water. So does drinking water help keep us slim, or is it just a fad? It turns out the evidence shows that drinking water can help us in the battle to lose weight. What's more, not drinking enough water can actually make us gain weight. Here's how:

Boost your metabolism

Our bodies are two thirds water. Not having enough water in our system forces our bodies to stop using up water on less important functions such as digestion, and use it on more important ones, like breathing. Your body uses a pint of water a day just to keep your lungs moist to aid breathing. So if your body isn't breaking down that food efficiently and converting it to energy, it will be stored as fat.

Kill the bloat

All that food that is sitting in your gut not being digested? It's starting to rot and let off gases. Not only is that unpleasant for your family and co-workers, it will be making your clothes feel tighter too!

Get rid of water retention

You body is retaining that water because it thinks water is a scarce resource. If you let your body understand that there is plenty of water coming its way, it won't hang onto the water it has. Then your shoes and your rings will fit much more comfortably.

Question your hunger

The body often interprets thirst as hunger. You think what you need is food, but what your body is actually craving is water. Try a glass of water and check again 20 minutes later. You might find you weren't really that hungry after all.

Beat the Lethargy

One of the effects of dehydration is lethargy. Feeling lethargic will give you another excuse not to exercise. So drinking plenty of water will give you lots of energy and bounce to take the stairs not the elevator, just like you promised yourself.

Fill up on water

In one study in 2008, Dr Brenda Davy at Virginia Tech found that drinking 2 cups of water before each meal led subjects in her trial eat 75 - 90 less calories per meal. Over a 12 week trial, her group lost on average 5lb more than the control group who did not drink water between meals. That 75 calories per meal may not sound a lot, but adds up to 14lbs over the course of a year. So partially filling up on water before you eat is a great way to cut down while still feeling full.

So water is a winner. It's a free, easy dieting shortcut to a better body.
