Are Harsh Facials Really More Effective Then Gentle Facials?

It is often claimed that harsh facials are more effective than gentle facials. In fact, both types of treatment have a number of pros and cons. In order to figure which is right for you, it is imperative that you understand how each treatment works and what the pros and cons are. Only then can you choose the facial that is best for your face and your wallet.

What Is a Harsh Facial?

A harsh facial is, as its name implies, a facial treatment that uses harsh chemicals on your skin. This type of facial is often referred to as a chemical peel. During the procedure, a mixture of acid chemicals is used to strip away the top layer of skin along with any impurities and blemishes. The damaged outer layer is removed, leaving only new, smooth skin.

There are a number of pros to getting a harsh facial. For one thing, most people see dramatic results after only a single therapy session. The appearance of wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation are automatically, and visibly, decreased. A chemical peel can also help combat damage done by the sun as well as free radicals.

There are also, however, a number of cons to getting a harsh facial. A chemical peel often removes several layers of skin, leaving the face red and peeling for days. In some cases, the redness can stay for weeks. In some, rare, cases, patients have even experienced scarring, infection, a change in skin tone and cold sore outbreaks. The safest and most effective peels are done by cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but their services come with a hefty price tag. A harsh facial can cost anywhere from $600-$900.

What Is a Gentle Facial?

Unlike a harsh facial, a gentle facial does not remove layers of skin or use harsh synthetic chemicals. Instead, it uses natural products and gentle cleansers to remove dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin.

A gentle facial does not result in redness or peeling. If effectively removes build up in pores and slightly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. It is safe for application by a certified esthetician, meaning that you do not have to pay exorbitant doctor's fees for the treatment. In fact, most gentle facials cost less than $100 per session.

That said, it can take a lot longer for the results of a gentle facial to become apparent. Some patients never see results at all.

In conclusion, there is little doubt that a harsh facial provides faster results. If you have money to spare, this may be the best option, especially if you don't mind the painful recovery process. If you don't mind waiting a little time for results, however, and prefer not having a red, peeling face after your session than a gentle facial is what you need.
