Dark Circles Under Eyes Causes And Treatments

Dark circles under eyes, also known as dark rings or shadows under the eye, is the developing of a dark skin between the upper part of the cheek and the lower eyelids. Dark circles under eyes can occur in children infants, adolescents and even adults. Dark circle under the eyes is neither a serious disorder nor does it signify any life threatening internal medical condition. Normally, this symptom does appear and disappear within a short time, it might however be a sign of other internal infections such as anemia or chronic dehydration if it persists.

Causes

Heredity - the symptomatic dark circle under eyes can be inherited and can run across the family lineage

Allergies - this can be allergies to dust, pollen grains, fumes and other such pollutants. These pollutants do irritate the eyes and can cause runny eyes as well as dark under eye circles.

Nasal congestion - this can cause eyes to darken and dilate the veins which drain from the nose to the eyes.

Pigmentation irregularities - this mostly affects people of color more so Asians and blacks

Sun exposure - this prompts the skin to produce more melamine, a pigment that gives the skin its characteristic color

- atopic dermatitis

- factors related to lifestyle such as emotional of physical stress, smoking, chronic alcoholism and crying.

- scratching or rubbing the eyes

- loss of fat, collagen and thinning skin common in aging people, this makes the bluish-red veins under the eyelids to come out more pronounced.

Treatments

Most cases of dark circles under eyes can be eliminated or reduced through the following methods.

Cold compression - you may use two spoonfuls of chilled of frozen peas, which should be wrapped in a silky or any soft cloth to lessen the discolored and dilate blood vessels. You may also use a cooled used teabag.

Extra sleep - most dark under eye circles are result from lack of sleep. This will cause hollow and paler eyes that make the dark rings more pronounced. Ensure you do have enough uninterrupted sleep, possibly 8 hours per night. You may consider acquiring more pillows; this will reduce the puffiness that occurs under your eyes due to fluid pulls in the lower eyelids as well as a comfortable night.

Sunscreens and dark glasses - sometimes, a tan that extended under the eyelids might hide the dark circles under eyes for sometimes, but this may be harmful due to the accumulated pigmentation. It is advisable to acquire dark glasses or sunscreens to end any possibility of pigments accumulating under your lower eyelids and cheeks due to direct sunrays.

Cosmetics - there are a lot of skin creams and lotions available over the counter that can prevent or decrease the dark circles under eyes. Be sure to check with your doctor to tell them of any allergies prior to using such skin sensitive cosmetics.

Camouflage - hiding your dark under eye circles using shades may not do much to improve this condition but may hide the circles for a while as the medications or treatment lotions take effect. Be sure to avoid shades containing glycolic acid or salicylic as this may irritate the delicate skin under the eyelids.

If this condition has any other symptoms such as shortness in breath, loss of consciousness, severe skin irritation, loss of vision or fainting, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible for examination.
